Green Tea Tasting
Treat yourself to a green tea tasting.
You will need a dozen tea cups, some green tea not in teabags, a timer or a clock, a way to boil water and a way to keep notes.
Perhaps there is a tea store near you. If not, online stores offer great variety and delivery service to your doorstep.
Obtain at least three types of loose green tea, at least one of which is organic. Let’s call them A, B, C.
Put out nine standard six-ounce cups in three groups of three.
Boil two quarts of water.
Add a spoonful of one type of green tea to each of the three cups in a group.
Repeat with the other two types until each cup has a teaspoon of tea.
You have A, A, A and B, B, B and C, C, C.
Add boiling water to all nine cups.
Set your timer for 1 minute. When it rings, do two things: Reset it for two minutes, and pour the tea from one cup in each group into an empty, marked cup. You now have one cup of each type of tea, brewed for one minute. One A, one B, one C. Sip and compare while you wait for the timer to ring. Keep notes on the teas you taste. Rinse out the soiled cups.
When the timer rings, do two things: Reset it for two more minutes, and pour the tea from one of each of the remaining cups in each group into an empty, marked cup. You now have one cup of type of tea, brewed for three minutes. One A, one B, one C. Sip and compare while you wait for the timer to ring. Keep notes on the teas you taste. Rinse out the soiled cups.
When the timer rings, do this: Pour the tea from the last three cups into the cups awaiting them. One A, one B one C. You now have one cup of each type of tea, brewed for five minutes. Sip and compare. Keep notes.
Do you prefer green tea brewed for a short time or a longer time? Did the organic tea taste different? What else did you perceive?
